eRobert's There Tip Sheet E-mail
Wednesday, 18 June 2008

These tips were compiled from my own experience, the experience of others, and various web sites. Credit goes to respective providers. Many of the following tips are not known to many people. You can not find them in There info. This is a work in progress. Please let me know if you have tips to add to the sheet. Enjoy! eRobert

eRoberts Tips

1. Get a regular browser with the tool bars, favorites, etc.  Open the internal There browser and highlight a word. Then press CNTL-N with the browser open.  The complete browser will appear with the page you were on displayed.

2. Correct profile display.  Many times when you view your profile, it displays incorrectly.  Here is how to fix it.  Bring up your profile and change who can view your profile.  Then change back to your original setting.  The profile will display correctly now.  This is a bug that There is aware of.

3. Teleport to one of the allowed placenames.  Go to the URL http://webapps.prod.there.com/goto/goto?placename=  (append the placename to the end). (Be sure to change spaces to plus-signs if there are any in the name, for example http://webapps.prod.there.com/goto/goto?placename=Beacon+Manor.)  If you have the Bedican or other compass, select “Teleport”, and type in the place.

4. You can similarly teleport to many locations or objects if you know their DOID numbers. You toggle these as visible by pressing SHIFT-CTRL-D. Then, use the teleport URL:  http://webapps.prod.there.com/goto/goto?obj=  (append the DOID number to the end). I don't know a good way of figuring out which DOIDs can be teleported to, other than trying!  Again, if you have the Bedican or other compass, just select “Teleport”, and type in the DOID.

5. Display an avatar's profile given their DOID number. This is useful when you have only the DOID number for the owner of an object, house, or PAZ, but not their name. The URL is http://webapps.prod.there.com/profiles/profiles?op=view&AvatarDoid=( appending the DOID number to the end).

6. Understand XML.  If you want to understand the guts of web pages displayed by There, it is sometimes frustrating that View/Source shows only the XML and not the generated HTML. The solution is to install Microsoft's "Internet Explorer Tools for Validating XML and Viewing XSLT Output", which you can find here:  http://snipurl.com/1o6rv .  Then, you can right mouse click on any screen and have an option to see the HTML. Very useful. Addendum: Other Thereans have suggested these other methods: (1) add the string "&omitXsl=1" to any page that returns XML, Example: webapps.prod.there.com/profiles/profiles?op=edit&omitXsl=1, or (2) use the URL "view-source:http://...".

7. Memory leak(s) can slow down your performance and make many functions not available.  Memory leaks are not the fault of your computer, but rather, poor programming practices.  Go here and get the free utility "MaxMem" to free up your memory: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/maxmem.htm .   This is especially helpful if you use the Bedican or other compass.  This small program makes it unnecessary to restart There many times due to memory usage.  (See also, Tip 15.)

8. Go There:  A marvelous compilation of information.  http://gothere.rumental.com:8000/index.php  If you have bboy Quickbar, this is accessible on level 0.

9. Here is the nicest map I have seen of There:   http://gothere.rumental.com:8000/grapher.php  This map shows much information and shows your present position.  If you are moving, it updates in real time.

10. Keyboard shortcuts and useful information:  http://gothere.rumental.com:8000/cheatsheet.html

11. To make boundaries appear, use CTRL-SHIFT-N.  Pressing once makes Hood boundaries visible.  Pressing twice makes Hood and lot boundaries visible.  Pressing three times makes Hood, lot, and Paz boundaries visible.  To make boundaries disappear, continue to press CTRL-SHIFT-N until they are gone.  Hood boundaries are blue, lot boundaries are pink, and paz boundaries are yellow.  If you have the Bedican or other compass, just type “/zones”

12. Here is a novel use for the hoverpack.  If you find yourself in a trap and cannot get out, just hop on your hoverpack and get against the wall or glass.  Then hop off the hoverpack.  You will be propelled through the wall or glass.  Then you can retrieve your hoverpack.  This trick can also be used to enter places or things.  eg: a rock, or a locked place. As well, you can face a wall or object closely and hop on your hoverpack.  This will also propel you through the object many times.

13. Configure any joystick or gamepad to work with There:   Free program.http://files.filefront.com/Joy2Mouse3exe/;6994670;/fileinfo.html

14. Voice gets Lost in IM?   Open IM to an offline person, and keep it minimized for use in this workaround. Speak in IM, then outside IM, re-minimize to a corner your "voice fix" IM.   Another suggested fix: IM someone, preferably someone who is offline. Page-down in the IM box, and then page-down outside the IM box. Close the IM box and you're all fixed.

15. Don't settle for second class email. Email is the most frequently used Internet function.  Don't use web mail.  Web mail such as Gmail, especially Yahoo, and Hotmail is second class. These are slow and unreliable.  Set up your own Internet domain at http://1and1.com . Mine is rweav.com.  The domain costs $5 per year, and the email package cost $0.99 per month and you get five email addresses. So you see, the enrire cost is less than $1.50 per month.  I use 1and1.com.  Let me know and I will help you with the setup.  If you decide to go this route, please let me know so I can get credit for referring you.  If you prefer, you can use the account as web mail just like Yahoo, etc.

Here are some the advantages of real POP3 email:  (POP=Post Office Protocol):

a. My email is fast… actually it is instantaneous.  No waiting to send or receive.
b. I control the spam and antivirus filter, so mail sent to me does not get rejected by over zealous filters.
c. My email is reliable.  I know for sure that I have sent it, and that I have received what was sent to me.
d. Since you will have your own domain, it is easy to make a web page.  Cost  is a small addition per month.

16. How are Funpasses determined?  These answers are gleaned from forum posts and not from There.  There refuses to reveal this for some strange reason.  There limits you to 4% skilling in each category per day.  The day is a rotating day.  For example, if you finish skilling up at 10am, you cannot skill further until 10am the next day.    Each skill level is assigned a points number, so:

Casual: 5
Avid: 15
Expert: 45
Renowned: 135
Legendary: 415.

Now add these up to find your funpass level:

Blue: 0
Bronze: 5
Silver: 130
Gold: 480
Platinum: 1501

Therefore, here are the net points you gain by going from one skill level to the next up:

Casual to Avid: 5
Avid to Expert: 30
Expert to Renowned: 90
Renowned to Legendary: 280

17.  The flash gun shoots flat and will hit a target further away than the tommygun.  In fact I have hit a target at 320 meters with the flash gun. The tommygun uses a larger paint balls and does more damage to the target.  However the tommygun does not shoot flat.  You must use elevation as the target gets further away.  It lobs the paint balls.  220 meters is the practical limit on distance.  At this distance you must elevate the gun to where the target is just below the circle of the sight.  So if you are in a close distance war, use the tommygun, and if you want to hit distant targets, use the flash gun or widow gun.

18. Here’s how to view your skill level percentages and tell how close you are to the next funpass level:  While online, view your profile.  In the explorer window you will see a URL.   Add this to the end of the url:  &omitXsl=1  and press Enter.  An XML page with all your data will be displayed.  About half way down on this page, you will see your skill information along with your progress to the next funpass.  It isn’t pretty, but you can see the information. If you have the Bedican or other compass installed, you can just type /rawprofile to get the same skill information.

19. Fix install delays.  When you reinstall the There software, you are faced with a lot of delay while There downloads objects and textures.  You can minimize this by preserving the two folders that contain most of the developer objects.  This way, you won't have to download all these objects and their textures when you log in after the install.

The two folders are:  \fu and \gamekit.  Just copy these folders to a safe place.  Then after   you reinstall There software just copy these back to the \Resources\ directory where they  came from. You will be asked if you wish to overwrite.  Just answer yes.

20. When using voice, you can hear a person up to 15 meters away.  Beyond that you hear nothing.  You can hear music much further from the source.  If  you have trouble hearing either, turn your back to the source.

21. Must have software.  I have mentioned the Bedican and other compasses several times. There are also other programs which make the There experience much better. Get these free programs.  You will be glad you did.

a) bboy Quick Bar: http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=43&Itemid=5
b) bboy My Gear: http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=143&Itemid=5
c) bboy Messagebar: http://there.rumental.com/index.php?p=software
d) bboy Lazy Boy: http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=149&Itemid=5
e) SNK’s Emote Bar:  http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=14&Itemid=5
f) Hacked Emotes: http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=226&Itemid=5
h) Giggles: http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=12&Itemid=5

22. There uses a set of four numbers to describe the location of an object.  X, Y, Z, and Heading. The X, Y, and Z numbers are referenced to the gray polygon you see up in any paz or lot.  The distance above ground for this polygon varies depending on the paz or lot size. This is the zero point.  The heading refers to the There compass heading of the object.

Here is the effect of changing these coordinates when you stand facing the decorator tag:

A larger “Y” number moves the object away from you.
A larger “X” number moves the object to your right.
A larger “Z” number moves the object up.

Changing the heading rotates the object to the specified There compass heading. You can see these coordinates in your layout file. You can modify them with notepad or  any text editor. Save the modified layout file and reload the  layout file in There to see the effects of the changes. There is a layout editor written by TheChaz which makes layout files changes easy.  The layout editor is available here:

http://www.thumdar.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_details&gid=220&Itemid=5

23.  Make your own Kilroy sign.  Kilroy signs are no longer sold and are very rare.  They cost 100k tbux or more in auctions. You can make a cheap one by going to Shop and buying an invisible destination. This makes a sign on the side opposite of where you drop it. You can rename it and add entries to the sign. Others can make entries on your sign as well. To touch it off cosmetically, in auctions you can buy a “Kilroy Frame”.  By placing this behind your sign, you have made a Leroy sign for about 8k.  You can also teleport to the invisible destination by getting its DOID number. (See tip 4)  Be sure to try the invisible destination before you buy it. You may not like it.

24. Thumdar Website is full of great add on programs and information. This site is a must see for all Therians.  Thumdar is a great guy and always ready to help.

All the Best,
eRobert
